Historic peace in the South Caucasus: Germany's contribution and Europe's new bridge to the East

In the presence of H.E. Nəsimi Ağayev, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Federal Republic of Germany, and H.E. Viktor Yengibaryan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Federal Republic of Germany, a parliamentary meeting focused on the historic peace process between the two countries. As President of the Parliamentary Society, Armin Laschet, Member of the German Bundestag and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, welcomed the participants. These included Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who had previously been Chairman of the German-South Caucasus Parliamentary Group and who emphasized in his speech the importance of the region for Germany and the European Union.

While conflicts and uncertainty are increasingly shaping the political reality around the world, it is particularly important to focus on those regions where conflicts are being successfully resolved.

After almost 40 years of conflict, lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia has become possible. The peace agreement signed in 2025 marks a historic turning point for the South Caucasus and opens up new prospects for stability, economic development, and regional connectivity. In particular, the agreement on new corridors and transport links holds great potential for economic cooperation and stronger connectivity between Europe and its eastern neighbors. This creates an opportunity to develop a reliable connection from Europe via Turkey to Central Asia – with implications for trade, infrastructure, energy security, and political capacity.

The parliamentary meeting focused on opportunities for political and economic cooperation between Germany and the countries of the South Caucasus, as well as Germany's role in promoting reconciliation, peace, and resilience in the region.

Since the end of the war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region in 2020, the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been supported by German and American mediation. Important diplomatic progress has been made in the rooms of the German Parliamentary Society.

In their contributions, the two ambassadors highlighted the successes achieved, the opportunities arising from them, and the remaining challenges on the path to sustainable peace and good neighborly relations.
