Working on a post-war scenario
Following the devastating events in the Middle East since October 7, 2023 and the ongoing escalation of violence, the search for common, inclusive solutions has become more urgent than ever. Since 2023, the "Quo Vadis Middle East?" conference series has created a unique space for dialog, analysis and understanding between politics, academia, business and civil society - with the aim of developing concrete perspectives for peace, reconciliation and regional cooperation.
Background and objectives
Immediately after the outbreak of war in October 2023, the organizers succeeded in bringing together key stakeholders from the region for an open exchange of views in Bonn—a format that was unprecedented at the time and has been continued on an ongoing basis in the years since. The conference “Quo Vadis Middle East?” continues this dialogue and addresses the question of how sustainable post-war scenarios and new forms of cooperation can be shaped in the Middle East.
Key objectives of the conference
Understanding Regional Consequences:
Gain a deeper understanding of the social, psychological, and economic consequences of conflicts for people in the region and ensure that these perspectives inform political decisions and peace initiatives.Addressing political implications:
Analyze the role of key Western actors from an external perspective, assess their impact on the region, and identify opportunities to strengthen relations.Exploring future challenges:
Identifying key obstacles and opportunities for sustainable post-conflict scenarios, with a particular focus on Germany’s role in developing innovative strategies for peace and stability in the Middle East.Promoting sustainable peace:
Empowering those who, despite loss and trauma, continue to overcome physical and emotional barriers and work together toward lasting peace.
Format
The project is intended as a pilot initiative for sustainable dialogue. The discussions will continue in the coming years with different groups of participants in order to involve all social actors relevant to the peace process.
